Mickey’s journey into healthcare began with their own injuries as a high school track athlete. Their family’s osteopath was the first person able to fully diagnose and rehabilitate Mickey’s stress fractures, which had been mismanaged and under-addressed up until that point. Though the fractures were in the shins, they were as much caused by issues in the low back, abdomen and pelvis. Hence treatment focused on multiple regions. That osteopath later became Mickey’s first mentor, and inspired them to go on to study chiropractic.

In Australia, a chiropractor undertakes 5 years of university study: a 3-year Bachelor’s, followed by a 2-year Master’s degree. Many of the classes are shared with the medical students. Mickey was the first chiropractic student from their university to do an exchange program, studying within the sports and exercise science faculty at Leeds Beckett University, UK. During their time in the UK, Mickey also undertook classes with both the British and European Schools of Osteopathy. Mickey graduated as both Dux and First in Clinical Studies, having won a number of scholarships during their time at university, as well as research awards for their publication, which they presented at conferences around Australia.

Mickey was also a running coach, the co-founder of a running coaching company, and the medical director of a marathon team. In 2019, they had 106 athletes compete in the NYC marathon, raising a record-breaking $250,000+ USD for their charity. Mickey has also worked extensively with CrossFit athletes and ultra-endurance athletes, and seeing nutritional issues arise amongst many of the athletes Mickey was treating, as well as their own history with parasites, Mickey began incorporating more and more functional medicine into their practice. This included stool analyses (including gut microbiome), cortisol stress tests, and hormonal dysregulation tests. They were also the research and clinical services manager for a medtech company that specialises in using laser therapy to stimulate the gut microbiome for treatment of a number of non-communicable diseases, such as Parkinson’s, IBD, and IBS.

Mickey often mentors other health and fitness practitioners, and teaches workshops on movement, rehabilitation, neuroscience, embodiment, leadership, and emotional intelligence.
