What is Health Coaching?
Health coaching is a partnership designed to help you reach optimal health and wellbeing. It’s not just about telling you what to eat or how to exercise—it’s about empowering you so that you can be in the driver’s seat of your own health. In other words, we don’t just provide the fish, we show you how to fish. It’s not about offering a quick-fix magic pill, but setting you up for success for the rest of your life.
Through personalised health coaching, I help you navigate your symptoms, set realistic goals, identify barriers and challenges, and provide support and accountability along the way. Often, I work collaboratively with nutritionists, GPs (Family Doctors), specialists, functional medicine practitioners, personal trainers, acupuncturists, naturopaths, chiropractors, osteopaths, and more in this process.
From stress management and nutrition guidance, to fitness planning and habit formation, health coaching covers all aspects of your well-being. If you’ve already been given a fitness or nutrition plan, health coaching can help you figure out the best way to ensure that you stick with it, and keep you accountable along the way.
My Approach to Health Coaching:
Whether you’re aiming to lose weight, manage a chronic condition, reduce stress, or improve your nutrition, health coaching can support a wide range of health and fitness goals. Read on for more about my unique approach:
Weight Loss & Nutrition:
Nutrition is about more than just calorie counting: we eat to spend time with loved ones, to refuel our bodies, as part of daily ritual, or to meet our emotional needs. If you want to improve your nutrition, it’s critical to learn both the foundations of nutrition science, as well as your psychological drivers behind what you eat. Having worked in gut microbiome science for many years, and having developed nutrition plans for both athletes and everyday people, I bring the latest in science and research to our sessions.
Personally, I have also healed from 2 gut parasites, and supported many clients along their gut journeys (alongside doctors and specialists where needed). For myself, I don’t believe in ‘calorie counting’ or ‘being strict with macros’, as I’ve built an intuitive and positive relationship with food (I’ve come a long way from vomiting many mornings on my way to work), and find these to be stress-inducing in ways that is often counter-productive. Nevertheless, I do recognise their value in some cases. I’ve worked with professional bodybuilders, endurance athletes, models, people trying to lose weight, control their diabetes, treat their heart condition, or improve their gut health. I work with many nutritionists, naturopaths, dietitians, personal trainers and acupuncturists, so if you already have a nutrition plan, but still would like some help implementing it, you are also welcome!
Stress Management and Mental Health:
Chronic stress can have a serious impact on both our physical and mental health. I’ve helped many people with stress, burnout and resilience. We work with it at both the level of the body and the mind. You can read a bit more about my approach under ‘Burnout coaching’.
Building Healthy Habits:
When it comes to health, we are our habits. Whether it’s incorporating more physical activity into your day, or developing better eating habits, a personalised approach is critical.
Fitness and Movement:
Physical activity is essential not only for our physical health, but also our mental health. It’s more powerful than any antidepressant, and is critical for brain health as we age. Energy and focus also come as a byproduct of exercise. Fascinatingly, it’s even associated with developing a healthier gut microbiome! Movement is a huge passion of mine: I was an elite-level track athlete, have run marathons and ultra-marathons, have hit high-level weightlifting standards (x2 body weight), and StrongFirst kettlebell trainer standards. These days, my predominant movement practices include all kinds of dance, soft acrobatics, strength training, and performance art.
I’ve also coached many international athletes, particularly in marathon, ultra-marathon and Ironman, as well as in powerlifting and weightlifting. Thus, I bring extensive knowledge of the body, fitness and physiology to my coaching sessions. Most importantly, though, we figure out what works for you. Not everyone enjoys movement in the same ways, and at the end of the day, the best exercise plan is the one you’re going to do. We aim for it to be not only effective, but also enjoyable!
Chronic Condition Management:
I work with many GPs (Family Doctors), functional medicine practitioners, specialists and other healthcare providers to help you manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disorders, arthritis, chronic pain, fatigue syndromes, long covid, burnout, and mental health issues. I work collaboratively with your healthcare team to support you along the journey as you make important changes to your health, empowering you along the way and removing any obstacles to long-term, sustainable change.
Coaching for Healthy Aging:
As we age, our relationships with our health and with our bodies change. With it, our habits may also need to change. Coaching can help you navigate transitionary life moments, fostering healthier habits as you move through time, so you can age gracefully and with vitality.
